Review
You can never really know another person, no matter how long they’ve been in your life. Often we don’t even know ourselves. Psychological thriller The Other Couple explores the unpleasant surprises that come from assuming that you can predict anyone’s behavior or know their inner thoughts. Maggie and Brad are a wealthy couple vacationing in Lake Tahoe. They meet Skye and Joe, share some drinks, and invite the younger couple to stay at their lakeside cabin. Things go well at first, but once sadistic con man Joe starts to show his true colors by attempting to blackmail Maggie for a secret she wants to keep hidden from her husband, the vacation takes a nightmarish turn that gets more and more complicated…and starts to rack up a body count.
The Other Couple is a lightning fast read: divided into brief chapters that alternate between the point of view of each of the four main characters, it provides an intriguing look into the chasm between a person’s intentions and how their actions are perceived. Both couples have their own problems — Joe is abusive and groomed the much younger Skye when she was still a teenager, whereas Maggie feels ignored by the oblivious Brad. Ironically, Brad is a marriage counselor who runs a successful blog advising other people how to keep their relationships healthy, but he misses every sign that his own marriage has been floundering for years. Neither one has any suspicions at first about Joe or Skye’s nefarious motives; the book makes repeated commentary on Maggie and Brad’s privileged lives that allow them to move through the world without fearing for their own safety or security.
The quick shifts in perspective and the increasing sense of foreboding make this a fun read for thriller fans. Though not all of the twists come as surprises, they still satisfy readers who have been waiting throughout most of the book for the other shoe to drop. It’s impossible to shake the feeling that something even worse is coming right around the corner, and the ending is a chilling reminder that we’re never as safe as we think we are. A fast read that provides disturbing insight into the frightening mysteries inside our heads, The Other Couple reminds readers that seemingly perfect relationships can have fatal flaws and trusting other people can be as foolish and deadly as trusting yourself.
Rating
I give this book 3.5 out of 5 coffins.
